What does a designer do?

A designer creates a garment from a series of sketches taking into consideration the personality, body type and style of the client. In my case, I start with an illustration (the design) which goes through the flat pattern, muslin, cutting and sewing before it comes to you as a completed garment.

What is the difference between a designer and a seamstress?

A designer is trained to be able to see an idea through from concept to consumer in all its stages. A seamstress’ skill is the expert construction of the designed garment using the designer’s patterns.

Why choose a custom design?

A custom designed garment is an opportunity to collaborate with a designer to create something truly original that reflects personal style. The client chooses a beautiful fabric in a colour they love and the garment is fitted on the body. It’s fun to be part of the design process.

For what occasion would I want a custom-designed dress?

Well, usually designed dresses are event dresses, the most obvious one being a wedding, then balls, graduations, formals, performances (for singers, musicians) and parties of all sorts.

What is involved in having a dress designed?

First we sit and chat and look through my drawings and other reference materials to determine what it is you are looking for. Then I do several drawings for you and you choose your original design from these drawings. Next I take your measurements and make up a flat pattern in your size. Then a muslin (a cotton version of the dress) is sewn, fittings done, changes made to the flat pattern before the dress is cut from the real fabric. The dress is sewn, and more fittings are done before you take home your one-of-a-kind Astri Prugger creation.

What does it cost?

Prices can vary according to the work involved and fabric choice. I always give an estimate ahead of time and try very hard to stick to that estimate. A consultation is free.
